The DURHAM FURNACE Model #17D17 Curing Oven is essentially horizontally positioned pressure vessel equipped with a circular, low temperature, heating chamber, designed to process parts up to 200 Degrees C at pressures of 25 PSIG.
The pressure vessel is designed and built in accordance with ASME specifications (not ASME stamped) for unfired pressure vessels and is provided with flanges on each end. The end closures are dished only heads provided with similar mating flangers, with "0" rings. The flangers are clamped together with a structural channel, rolled with its flangers positioned inward such that the vessel flangers fit into the circular groove. The rear channel is split into 2 semi circular pieces which, when bolted together form a ring completely surrounding the vessel flange. The taper associated with the structural channel mates with a similar taper on the flange so that tightening the bolts forces the flange faces together. A similar design is employed for the front door except that the channel is a single piece split. The split is expanded and closed by a lever operated toggle mechanism. When in the expanded position, the heating inside diameter of the clamping channel is increased sufficiently to allow the front head to pass through it, thus exposing the heating chamber. The front head is hinged on the left. A locking mechanism is provided to preclude the possibility of opening the vessel while under pressure.
The electroless nickel plated vessel is provided with various openings and is equipped with a pressure relief valve set at 25 PSIG.
The heating chamber consists of a fabricated stainless steel cylinder insulated with 1" of high quality ceramic fiber insulation wrapped around the O.D. and held in place with light gage sheet aluminum thus virtually encapsulating the insulation. Circular disks with cake-pan configuration contain the insulation for the ends. The rear is mounted to the cylinder and provides mounting for the air recirculating fan motor. The front disk is mounted to the vessel door.
Heat is supplied by 3 low watt density silicone strip heaters that are wrapped around the stainless steel cylinder.
Located in the heating chamber are 3-drawer type shelves to facilitate loading operating.
A stainless steel fan is located in the rear of the heating chamber behind a baffle plate which causes air to be drawn into the center of the fan where it is redirected along the walls of the heating chamber towards the front where it will be drawn through the shelves.
A unique feature of the oven is the fan driving motor which has been specially designed to operate within the confines of the pressure vessel thus eliminating any rotary feed thrust and their required maintainance.
The oven is mounted at a convenient height on a moveable dolley equipped with leveling pads. Services between the oven and control panel are thru necessary cables and hoses. Located on the front of the dolley are necessary day to day control operators.
A NEMA-12 Control Panel containing all instrumentation and power control devides is part of the system. Temperature control is established by a system where the heating elements are allowed to run at their (A) maximum level of heat utilizing a Honeywell UDC 3000 Controller and 3-SCR power controllers. A second Honeywell DLP-721 Programmable Temperature (and pressure) Controller produces a signal which opposes the heating element controller causing the heat to be reduced to the desired level. A second channel in the DCP-721 controls the vessel pressure through a series of solenoid valves.
A Honeywell DPR-3000 recorder is provided to record pressure and temperature as well as provide system control functions.
