The best time to listen to your baby
The best time to hear your baby is in the evening and a couple of hours after you have eaten. This will give you a chance to digest your food so your own body sounds will not be so loud. This is also usually the time when your baby is most active.
How to find your baby s heartbeat.
You will be able to judge where your baby is from where she is kicking. Make sure you are in a quiet room, use a generous amount of Ultrasound gel where you are placing the Doppler. Start by placing the Doppler about 2 inches below your belly button and a little to the right. Your baby is very small so move it very slightly as you try to locate her. You will hear her heartbeat best when her back is against your stomach. Don t be alarmed if you don t hear her, she may simply have changed positions. As your baby gets older her heartbeat gets stronger and will be easier to find so please have patience.
Place the Doppler probe low down on your abdomen - near your bikini line.
Tilt the Doppler probe downwards towards the pubic bone.
Move the probe VERY SLOWLY until you pick up the heartbeat.
For best results keep the transducer handle as still as possible to maintain a steady signal.
It is common for the Fetal Doppler to pick up the heartbeat in two different places - do not be alarmed, this is the same heartbeat. As your pregnancy progresses gradually place the probe higher up on your abdomen
