Strontium metal: alkaline earth element sample
Strontium metal is a silvery-white metal similar to Calcium metal but more reactive and softer. It belongs to the alkali metal group. Freshly cut strontium has a silvery appearance, but rapidly turns a yellowish white color with the formation of the oxide. It will react vigorously with water releasing hydrogen. Powdered or finely divided strontium will ignite spontaneously in air. The pure metal has few uses, but strontium salts are used in fireworks due to the brilliant red color that they impart to flame.
