If you're looking for an exceptionally clean, carefully-maintained Drake R8, you've found one. Excellent as-new condition in all respects. VHF converter onboard! These converters are selling for around $300 by themselves. I considered removing it and selling it separately, but decided to present it for sale just as it is presently equipped. I've owned a lot of receivers and transceivers in my day, and as far as I'm concerned, the Drakes are very, very tough to beat for the money. The audio quality, in particular, of the R8 is very noteworthy, even into its own internal speaker, and with a large external speaker, it is absolutely excellent. The bass response curve of the R8 also notable, providing for full-bodied fidelity when the lower audio frequencies are present in the signal, such as AM phone, broadcast stations, and Hi-Fi SSB. I'm going to assume that if you're looking at this listing, you are familiar with these receivers, so I won't go into lengthy detail regarding specifications and performance. As a very brief overview of the relevant specs, the R8 offers superb multi-mode reception (AM, FM, USB, LSB, RTTY and CW). There are selectivity choices of 6, 4, 2.3, 1.8, and .5 kilohertz. Very effective Passband Tuning, an absolute must for crowded ham band reception. It incorporates an Synchronous AM Detector that works. And much more. (Universal Radio recently sold a Drake R8, WITHOUT the VHF converter or the original box and packing, for $700. In light of that, I would think that this is a good opportunity to acquire an exceptional R8, WITH VHF converter and original packaging, for not much more.)
